The Convenience of Dishwashers

By: Aaron Guhl

Dishwashers for some people are something that they just can't live without. Once you get used to their convenience, then doing the dishes manually is something that you can never see yourself doing again. Today dishwashers have so many different features that allow you to have your dishes washed the way you need them. If you have some pots and pans that would normally require some tough scrubbing, most dishwashers have tougher settings made for pots and pans that can take care of that for you.

Today, when a dishwasher can cost anywhere from $300 to $1200, there is no reason why anyone should live without one. If the cost of one isn't the deterrent, but space is, they have smaller units or even countertop portable units that can fit just about anywhere.

There are a few things you should look for when looking to buy a dishwasher. Water efficiency is a big one, especially with today's conserving mindset. About 80% of the power used for a dishwasher is used when heating the water. The older models of dishwashers and when dishwashers first came out used to use about 10 gallons of water per use. Now most of them use about 8 gallons per use and some smaller dishwashers use even less. When shopping for you, look at the water holes on the rotating spray arms. Compare the different models you are looking at. The smaller the holes the more powerful their spray is and the less water you will use in the process. This will save you time and money and will also result in a better wash job. Each dishwasher should have an energy efficiency rating that you can find on the label or packaging of the dishwasher.

If you are looking for a dishwasher that stays quiet while in use, you will want to look at how thing the walls are on the unit. Typically the thicker the walls the more insulation the dishwasher will have and will thus be quieter while in use.

Most dishwashers will cost you around $400 to $600 dollars with some of the smaller portable units costing as little as $200 or the high-end units costing around $1200. Always remember when shopping that price is not always an indicator of quality. You can find some very high quality dishwashers at a low price and some very unreliable dishwashers that are expensive. Keep an eye out for sales that may be going on at other stores and see if one particular store will match or beat anothers. Also keep in mind that if your typical load of wash is just a few dishes per run, then you may be best opting for a dishwasher without as many features and that doesn't use as much water per use. This will be easier to maintain and also cost you less in the long run.

However, if you are someone who spends a lot of time cooking and hosting dinners for people, you may not want to spend lots of time cleaning up after you have just spent lots of time preparing the meal. So you may find it best to choose a dishwasher that has lots of features and that can fit a lot of dishes in it.

No matter what type of dishwasher you are looking to purchase, you can be sure that there is a dishwasher out there that will fit your needs.
